HEAT INSULATION OF A ROOF

On heating up traditional flat roofs a waterproof membrane is an upper layer. Influence of atmospheric factors (solar irradiation, ozone, atmospheric precipitations, sharp temperature fluctuations) as well as mechanical influence on a waterproof cover result in deterioration of roofing and in getting out of order thereof. To prolong working life of a waterproof membrane, in these latter days they widely use a construction of inversion roof, at that a waterproof layer is protected by a layer of an efficient heat insulant on the top. The inversion roof structure is applied, as a rule, in organization of exploited roofs. High requirements to be met by heat insulation of such roofs make the boards of extruded polystyrene TEPLOMA practically the sole material applied in pedestrian terraces, “green” roofs, car parking, underground trade centers.

Inversion roofs are the simplest and the most reliable constructions of flat roofs. At that they assure: protection of a waterproof membrane from temperature fluctuations, protection from solar irradiation.

Construction of inversion roof put into practice thanks to unique properties of extruded polystyrene let considerably increase working life of a waterproof membrane and in log term reduces exploitation costs. Besides, in this case there is no need to put on a separate vaporproof layer.

ROOF REPAIRING
  1. Examination of roofing, damage discovering and the state of heatproof layer.

  2. Calculation of supporting capacity of roofing construction taking into account of supplementary elements.

  3. If necessary, removal of an old roofing and heatproof layer.

  4. Cleaning and adjusting of surface to assure a slide not less than 2° to drainpipes.

  5. On adjusted surface they put waterproof mastic and roll waterproof material is directly laid over.

  6. Over the membrane they put TEPLOMA boards the thickness of which is determinated by thermotechnical calculation providing that a normative temperature regime of a waterproof layer is respected. They consider admissible Ò4^ > 0 °Ñ in order to avoid ice accumulation on the surface of water isolation in winter. The edges of the boards should be profiled as tonguing and grooving or a step.

  7. To protect heatproof boards from a flow slide it is recommended to lay over the boards a separating vapor-permeable film or a layer of non-woven synthetic bed of high rupture and burst resistance, for instance, geotextile. Geotextile bed is not less than 15 cm overlapped.

  8. To protect from the wind over the layer of geotextile they put a weight of coarse gravel (not less than 16 mm coarse) of a layer not less than 5 cm. Gravel filling as a weight is applied if while exploitation some people are supposed to stay on the roof and repairing and preventive works are supposed to be done. Instead of gravel filling it is possible to lay walkway slabs over a layer of fine gravel. In this case operational integrity of the roof increases and the risk that the wind will rip away some gravel grains from the roof reduces.

Cold roof repairing:
  1. Examination of roofing.
  2. Calculation of supporting capacity of roofing construction taking into account of supplementary elements.
  3. If necessary, removal of an old roofing.
  4. from 4 to 8 – similarly to previous clauses of the section “Heated roof repairing”.

Constructions of a repaired roof are analogous to those 1 and 2. On constructing new buildings and structures inversion roofing is analogous to old roofs repairing excluding points 1 and 2. Constructions of new roofs are analogous to those 1 and 2.

PITCHED ROOFS

In many countries and this latter time in Ukraine already in building designing they take into account use of underroof (attic-floor) room to live there. Also for old buildings an attic-floor room is progressively used as a supplementary dwelling room. For this purpose roof surface as an external envelope of a dwelling room should be sufficiently insulated.

To insulate pitched roofs they apply extruded polystyrene TEPLOMA as filling insulating boards between the platforms.

Heat insulation on the platforms: Heatproof layer is put on the platform under roof tile. At that wooden construction of the roof is protected from temperature fluctuations and moisture. External side of the boards can serve as a decorative detail of the interior. A big possible length of the boards TEPLOMA (2 500 mm – a special order) let considerably accelerate the process of laying and grooves and tongues let get a continued heatproof layer. In this case there is no need to apply a supplementary water isolation.

1. Roofing (for instance, metal tile, roof tile)
2. Lathing
3. Vapor-permeable waterproof membrane
4. TEPLOMA
5. Inner paneling (for instance, gypsum board)
6. Platform

The boards TEPLOMA are applied in standard classical constructions mostly in roofing base from steel roof sheeting profile.
